Cars after 2000 (petrol engine) or 2003 (diesel) are capable of OBD2.or EOBD (Europe). With the built-in protocols to CAN / ISO9141-2 / KWP2000 / VPWM and PWM this covers all vehicles permitted in the EU.
Ford vehicles are equipped for the most part with PWM between 1996 -- 2004. American imports have VPWM. Newer vehicles after 2004 have for the most part CAN protocol.
The choice of the protocols is carried out automatically and is transparent for the users software. The protocol recognition and connection are executed within two seconds.
If the built-in button is kept pushed down when slipping in to the OBD 2 service socket, the interface switches over to the software platform VAG.com and behaves like a K/KL interface.
